Exploring the Universe

30” x 40”, Oil on Canvas

The eyes are the window to the soul and the focal point of this piece. The portrait has an alluring expression with parted lips and a confrontational gaze positioned straight ahead. The gaze alone demands the attention of the viewer pulling them into the realm of the painting to explore all of the small details found within it. The more the viewer stares into the face the more little details can be found, and the more the face starts to transform into a galaxy of stars with red and blue hues on the cheek. The piece is signifying the importance of looking into someone’s 'soul' or their true self and exploring all the little pieces that make a single person so unique, not just on the outside but on the inside. It takes the viewers full attention and time to analyze the piece, just as the viewer would do to analyze or get to know another human being.

The Performance

30” x 38”, Oil on Board, 2018

This is a portrait of a young ballet dancer surrounded by flowers. Dancers receive flowers after a performance; the baby's breath flowers signify not only the youth of the dancer, but that a beautiful performance has been completed. The soft blue hue in the background allows the viewer to focus in on the details around the piece and complements the warm tones on the skin and face. The dancer looks off into the distance with a gleam in her eye. She has performance makeup on yet her natural beauty is undisturbed. The spotlight beams down on the dancer giving an exaggerated highlight to her profile. It is in this moment that the dancer has finished her last choreographed movement and turns to face her audience. The music has stopped, and the lights are seconds from going black. The performance is complete.

This portrait was inspired by the artist Mike Dargas. The honey dripping down a realistic portrait is a trademark of Dargas. Attention to detail can be seen in this piece through skin tone, highlights, and values. The piece is saturated in warm hues. The reds all tie into each other on the background, lips, nails, and also complements the warm orange-yellow hues in the honey. There are warmer tones on the skin around the face reflecting the bright red background. Cooler skin tones can be found in the middle where the background would not reflect as much. Overall, this is a fun expressive piece that draws the viewer in due to its unique attributes.

Aside from the inspiration from Dargas, the story behind this piece is a modern tale of society trying weird beauty treatments they find online. In this piece the woman has dripped this unknown, honey-like serum all over her face in the hopes to become more beautiful or obtain a higher social media status by posting a picture using the product. Her posed face to take a photo for social media is captured in the painting. The face she is making is a popular look that can be found all over people's social media pages and profiles.
